Norwood scale · stage 7

Norwood 7

The scale's end point: only a low horseshoe above the ears and around the back remains, often finer than it once was.

Norwood 7 is the pattern's finished state: everything above a low band circling the sides and back is gone, and even that band is often narrower and finer-textured than the hair it used to hold. This is the most severe classification the scale has — there is no Norwood 8.

It's worth saying that arriving here is common and unmysterious: pattern baldness runs to completion in a meaningful share of men, especially with an early start. The stage-7 question isn't 'what went wrong' but 'which of three real options suits me' — and none of the three comes in a bottle.

What you'd see in the mirror

  • The remaining band sits low — at or just above the ears, around to the nape
  • Band texture is often finer and sparser than the hair on a stage-5 or 6 head
  • Skin on top has usually been bare long enough to need sun protection thinking, not hair thinking
  • No new territory is being lost, because there's none left to lose — stage 7 is stable by definition

Norwood 7 vs 6 — and vs alopecia totalis

Against a 6, the tell is the horseshoe's height and quality: a 6 keeps substantial, higher-starting side coverage; a 7's band is low and often thinned. The other confusion worth naming: Norwood 7 is not total hair loss. Alopecia totalis — losing all scalp hair including the horseshoe, usually with body hair involvement — is a different, autoimmune condition and a doctor's appointment, not a stage on this scale. Pattern baldness always spares the horseshoe; that's why transplant donor hair exists at all.

Haircuts that work at stage 7

At stage 7 every good look is a committed look. The horseshoe kept tight, or the full shave — halfway keeps neither dignity nor hair.

  • The full shave, daily or near-daily — at this stage it's the default answer for a reason
  • Zero-guard horseshoe if shaving daily isn't your temperament — tight enough to read as intentional
  • The beard does the styling work now; invest the ten minutes a day there instead
  • Avoid: any arrangement of remaining hair that references the top of the head; nothing up there is coming to help

Treatment at this stage, honestly

Medication has no role at stage 7 beyond, occasionally, protecting donor hair ahead of surgery. Every foam, tablet, serum and laser device marketed for regrowth is aimed at earlier scalps; money spent on them here is a donation to the industry.

Transplantation at stage 7 is constrained by arithmetic: the territory is at its largest (4,500–6,500 grafts to address seriously) while the donor band is at its smallest and sometimes finest. For many stage-7 men full coverage simply isn't achievable at acceptable density, and the honest surgical offer is a frontal frame with light feathering behind — which, done well, still transforms how a face is framed. The consultation that starts with donor-area assessment is the trustworthy one.

Scalp micropigmentation is arguably at its best here: a full-head shaved-stubble effect with no donor constraint at all. And the shave-plus-beard combination remains the zero-cost, zero-maintenance-anxiety answer that a large share of stage-7 men eventually land on and report they should have chosen years earlier.

Skip the lotions — they're not for this stage

Nothing in a bottle rebuilds a Norwood 6–7. A large transplant can restore a frame if donor hair allows; plenty of men instead shave it, grow stubble, and are surprised how little they miss it. Both are real answers; daily foam is not.

FAQ

Norwood 7, asked directly

Can a Norwood 7 get a hair transplant?
Sometimes — it depends almost entirely on donor supply. With a strong donor band, a frame-first restoration (4,500–6,500 grafts over multiple sessions) is possible; with a depleted one, an ethical clinic will decline. Treat any clinic that promises full stage-7 coverage without examining your donor area as disqualified by the promise itself.
How common is Norwood 7?
Common enough that you see it every day: pattern baldness progresses to its final stages in a significant minority of men, with likelihood rising steeply with age and early onset. It's the visible end of an extremely ordinary process, not a rare condition.
What are the actual options at Norwood 7?
Three: a donor-permitting transplant focused on the frontal frame; scalp micropigmentation for a shaved-stubble look; or the shave, usually with a beard doing the framing. All three are legitimate. The fourth option sold online — regrowth products — is not one at this stage.
